The Bible and You: What Proverbs 26:2 Can Teach Us About Life

“Like a flitting sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest.” In other words, a curse that is not deserved will not find its target. This is a good principle to live by in all areas of life. When someone mistreats us, it is often tempting to retaliate in kind. But if we can remember that the other person’s behaviour is not a reflection of our worth, we can avoid getting caught up in a cycle of revenge.

This doesn’t mean that we should be doormats, however. There are times when it is necessary to stand up for ourselves and set boundaries. But even then, we can do so without resorting to cursing or other forms of verbal abuse.

“As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.” This verse from the book of Proverbs is a reminder that we should be careful with our words. When we speak rashly or without thinking, we may end up causing problems that could have been avoided. Let’s take a look at some examples of how this can happen, and what we can do to avoid it.

This is an important principle to remember, especially when we are feeling wronged or misunderstood. When someone says something hurtful to us, it can be tempting to respond in kind. But if we remember that the curse will not stick, we can choose to let it go and not give it any power over us.
